A cracked windshield after a car accident.

Friday, June 7th, Amarillo police responded to a report of an accident near 45th and Soncy. A Chevy Tahoe had been driving north on Soncy at dangerously high speeds, ran a red light, and smashed into a Cadillac CTS. Upon impact, the Cadillac CTS spun out and ejected the passenger of the vehicle from the car. The passenger and 18-year-old driver died at the scene of the accident.

Another 18-year-old passenger in the backseat of the Cadillac survived and was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries along with the driver of the Chevy Tahoe.

Before the Cadillac came to a complete stop, it hit two other vehicles, but the drivers and passengers of those cars were not injured.

Unfortunately, terrible accidents like this are not uncommon in the city of Amarillo, Texas. The Texas Department of Transportation’s CRIS system reported that there were 2,110 car accidents in Amarillo, Texas in 2023 alone. These accidents involved 4,382 vehicles and 5,900 people in total.

Car accidents are unfortunately a common occurrence, and as can be seen from the recent accident on June 7th, can be devastating.

Not only are the lives of those involved thrown off course but so are the lives of their families. Whether from severe injuries that create gaps in income, hefty medical bills and personal property damage, or deaths that lead to loss of consortium, those lives will never be the same. Victims of these accidents should not have to be the ones who foot the bill for their recovery. Instead, the liable party should be held accountable for their actions. This is where having an experienced Amarillo car accident attorney makes the difference.

Experience Matters In an Amarillo Car Accident Case

After a car accident, insurance companies try and weasel their way into getting the injured party to accept a settlement that is less than they deserve. They do this by twisting information and facts, in an attempt to shift partial blame or get the injured party to admit that things aren’t that bad. What to Do After a Car Wreck in Amarillo

Car accidents are extremely stressful events that can leave individuals in a state of shock, fear, and panic. While these feelings are 100% normal, knowing what to do immediately after an accident helps ensure that further issues don’t arise, that the injured parties can get the aid they need and that you can get the compensation you deserve to cover damages. Here is what you need to do after an accident:

  1. (If It Is Safe to Do So) Move Your Car: It is extremely dangerous to stay exactly where the accident happened. If you can do so, you will want to be able to move your car to the side of the road to ensure that you and your passengers are not struck by another vehicle. There are some situations, however, where your vehicle may be too damaged to move or there are serious injuries that make moving yourself or another injured party impossible. In either of these cases, make sure you turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers of the accident.
  2. Check On the Other Drivers and Passengers: If you can, check in with the other drivers and passengers to ensure that no one is seriously injured. If someone is, immediately call emergency services for medical assistance.
  3. Call the Police to Report the Accident: Once you have been moved to safety and made sure everyone is alright, you will want to call the police to file a police report.
  4. Gather Information About the Accident: As you wait for the police to arrive, you should gather as much information as you can about the accident. This information will help you when you make your police report and includes the following:
    1. Names of the other driver/drivers involved
    2. License plate numbers of the other vehicles involved along with their make and model
    3. Insurance information from the other drivers involved
    4. Witness statements and contact information
    5. Location of the accident
  5. Take Pictures of the Scene of the Accident: Use your phone to document the accident scene. This includes the damages to all vehicles involved, the injuries you sustained, and debris from the accident site.
  6. Contact an Amarillo Car Accident Attorney: You will want to contact an Amarillo car accident attorney before you talk with the other party’s insurance company. This will ensure that you have legal representation to keep them from bullying you into saying the accident wasn’t as bad as it seemed or that your injuries are not as severe as they are. The attorneys at the Hernandez Law Group, P.C. will ensure that you get the full amount you deserve from the other driver and the insurance company.
  7. Visit a Medical Professional: After an accident, you need to seek out a medical professional, whether it is at a hospital or your doctor to get checked over. This is true even if you do not have any injuries. Sometimes, injuries are masked under adrenaline coursing through your system after the accident, causing the symptoms to only show up later. A healthcare professional will be able to check you over for injuries and ensure that you are getting the proper medical treatment to take care of them. Make sure you keep all records from these appointments and treatments.
